The 104th Children’s Day Forest Hills Gardens

Photos Rob SchnellPhotos Rob SchnellThe Celebrations Association of Forest Hills Gardens sponsored the wonderful 104th Annual Children’s Day at Flagpole Green on June 2. Luckily, with original predictions of a 90 percent chance of rain, there were only overcast skies. Volunteers included members of the Celebrations Association, Men’s Club of Forest Hills (1913), Terrace Realty and local residents. The pet judging contest was hosted by James and Crystal of Wagging Tails Pet Store on Metropolitan Avenue. Crystal and resident Anna Radford oversaw the event as judges chose Pepper, a salt and pepper cockapoo mix for First Place, with Sadie, a black shepherd mix taking the Second Place ribbon. All contestants were given a treat bag from Crystal and James. Children were treated to fun in bouncy houses, a Tilt-a-Whirl ride, Giant Slide, rock climbing wall, Pirate Ship swing, pony rides, a tour of an NYPD squad car by the 112th Precinct, and tennis lessons from the West Side Tennis Club. Community Board 6 was represented by NYC OEM Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) which handed out literature on ways to protect children, pets and everyone in an emergency. The Men’s Club of Forest Hills (1913) master chefs barbecued up some gourmet favorites. The glorious day concluded with running races for different age groups and the raffle draw.
