Napoli Pizza & Pasta has been a family affair for 21 years, with its doors always open to welcome your family to dine on home-style Italian cooking. Once inside the cozy, casual restaurant, your senses are filled with the scent of fragrant garlic bread and sautéed chicken Marsala, the sound of clanging dishes and laughter, and the sight of happy families and friends all enjoying the best home style Italian food in Astoria.

Antonio Petito runs the kitchen, while daughter Maria works the dining room, and sons Donato and Sal help too as the phone rings off the hook with orders and the door swings open all day and night. You could come to Napoli just for the fabulous, tender, crisp-crusted pizza with your favorite toppings and be totally satisfied, but then you’d miss out on all the delicious pasta dishes, and chicken, veal, and seafood entrees on offer.

We started with the house garlic bread, warm from the oven, and some crispy, tender calamari rings with a side of zesty marinara. Next, a platter of antipasto salad for the table arrived, full of greens, tomatoes, olives, and cuts of salami and provolone, dressed as you like. Kids and adults alike love hand-cut, fried zucchini sticks, mozzarella sticks, and juicy stuffed mushroom caps.

Over glasses of wine, we considered the evening’s specials: Frutti di mare over a mound of spaghetti, with your choice of white or red sauce, Flounder mare e chiara, or salmon Napoli with spinach, mushrooms, and plum tomatoes. We went for two of the three and enjoyed the freshest shrimp, mussels, and clams with garlicky tomato sauce for a hearty Lenten Friday meal. My flounder was fresh, flaky, and delicious, also flanked with mussels and shrimp.

Classic pasta dishes from the menu include spaghetti Bolognese topped with a rich, meaty sauce, luscious fettuccine alfredo or spaghetti carbonara with smoky pancetta ($7.95). One of the house favorites is pasta alla Napoli, tossed with chunks of tender chicken breast, thinly sliced mushrooms, plum tomatoes, basil, white wine, garlic and parsley, all for the incredible price of just $9.95. Linguine alle vongole (clams) is prepared with garlic and oil, or with tomato, garlic, and herbs and all pasta dishes are generously

portioned. I’ve often taken home leftovers for lunch the next day. What authentic Italian restaurant doesn’t serve chicken and veal parmigiana, served as an entrée platter or piled high onto a hero sandwich. The sauté pan sizzles with chicken Francese or Marsala with sliced mushrooms and a splash of sweet Marsala wine. Fresh shrimp scampi or shrimp marinara goes well over linguini. Keep it light with grilled chicken paillard over Caesar salad, or crisp, golden Chicken Milanese with salad.

Besides the great pizza, try a meatball parmigiano hero, spinach and cheese calzone, or sausage and pepper roll for lunch. Napoli will even cater to your home or office so leave the cooking to the experts. For dessert, you must try the homemade zeppoles, hot and golden and dusted with sugar, or a hunk of their Italian style cheesecake, or a crunchy cannoli.
