Urban Upbound CEO and co-founder Bishop Mitchell Taylor was joined by Reverend Patrick H. Young, Council Members Costa Constantinides and Jimmy Van Bramer, Angela DenDekker representing Congress Member Joseph Crowley, Edwin Cadiz, resident leaders, non-profit partners and members of the community to encourage low-income New Yorkers and NYCHA public housing residents to take advantage of the city’s free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites and potentially receive thousands back in their tax returns. Elected officials, officials from the IRS, New York State officials, resident leaders and community partners joined Urban Upbound to celebrate EITC Awareness Day. Urban Upbound is proud to announce that free tax preparation is offered in over 20 sites throughout New York City. Last year, Urban Upbound provided free tax prep services to over 12,500 individuals who collectively received over $15 million in refunds. This year, the organization hopes to serve 15,000 New Yorkers. Free VITA sites enable qualified working families and individuals to take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC), both of which provide a particularly important lifeline in tough economic times. The Urban Upbound Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program offers free tax preparation assistance to individuals generally making $64,000 or less. Free VITA sites enable qualifying working families and individuals to file their taxes and utilize all of their return-increasing buying power and a means to start a savings plan for the future. Urban Upbound has tax offices in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Bronx and Queens including Far Rockaway.

“I commend Bishop Taylor and Urban Upbound for offering this great program to our community” said Assembly Member Catherine Nolan. “It is important that residents have all the up-to-date information and assistance they need to file their taxes as the deadline approaches,” said Nolan.

Council Member Constantinides said, “With a Congress that implements tax policies that only benefit the rich, it’s up to community organizations to help middle and working class New Yorkers on fixed incomes who may not have the resources they need when preparing their taxes. Urban Upbound provides awareness of relevant tax credits and critical financial literacy for families to increase their buying power and save more. Thank you to Bishop Mitchell Taylor and Urban Upbound for providing these resources to families across Queens.”

Council Member Van Bramer said, “With Donald Trump’s tax scam taking money from hardworking New Yorkers to fund tax breaks for billionaires, it has never been more important than now to not leave money on the table during tax season. The Free Tax Prep program will help countless individuals file and save thousands each year and is an example of the essential resources Urban Upbound provides to the residents of Queensbridge, Ravenswood, the Woodside Houses, and NYCHA developments throughout Queens. I am proud to support the essential work that Urban Upbound does to support residents of public housing in Queens.”
