GAUDIO’S Pizzeria & Ristorante

We applaud and celebrate Gaudio’s Pizzeria and Restaurant on its 60th Anniversary in Astoria! It all began when Signore Gaudio opened the restaurant in 1958, offering crispy pizza with homemade sauce and hand-shredded mozzarella to this neighborhood of immigrants. The neighborhood has evolved and Gaudio’s has undergone several renovations over these 60 years, but the great food remains the same. Gaudio’s is a hidden gem in Astoria with delicious Italian food, a clean, comfortable dining room with waiter table service, and great prices. Everyone is welcome at Gaudio’s and it’s so easy to find on bustling 30th Avenue, just east of Steinway Street.

You’ll find Nicky (Domenico) Gaudio up front, manning the hot ovens and tossing hundreds of pies in the air each day. Nicky and Gaudio’s were featured on Channel 2 News for their famous pizza and fabulous entrées. Watch the video on their website and you’ll want to pick up the phone to place an order immediately! Astorians of all ages come in all day and night from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the delicious, crispy pizza. “The secret is in the quality of the dough,” said Nicky on the news segment. It’s true, so light and crisp, yet firm enough to hold your favorite toppings including sausage, pepperoni, olives, mushrooms, peppers and more. My favorite is “grandma’s pizza” which contains fresh mozzarella and homemade marinara sauce on a thin, crispy, square crust. Round and square Sicilian pies are available as well as pizza bianca (white pizza), calzones stuffed with creamy ricotta and sausage rolls. Hero sandwiches made on fresh bread are filled with potatoes and eggs, chicken parmigiana, eggplant parmigiana, grilled chicken breast and much more. There’s free delivery to your home or office so make your next meeting or child’s birthday party a hit with pizza and sandwiches from Gaudio’s.

Take your whole family to dinner at Gaudio’s for an upscale tasting meal at working family prices. Relax over a glass of wine, a cold beer, or a soft drink while you take a look at the menu. Kids love the mozzarella sticks and fried ravioli, and try not to take some. Gaudio’s fried calamari are light and crispy, served with hot marinara sauce. Juicy baked clams oreganata come a dozen to an order on a sizzling platter, topped with crispy breadcrumbs with wedges of lemon. Try those Little Neck clams “possillippo” style with white wine, garlic and herbs for a real treat, then soak up all the delicious broth with Gaudio’s hot-from-the-oven foccaccia and Italian bread. Choose a hot antipasto platter with a selection of items, or the cold antipasto with slices of cured meats and cheeses. The colorful Gaudio salad is composed of crunchy lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes with thin slices of savory salami, prosciutto and provolone cheese, garnished with red, roasted peppers and zesty Italian dressing.

Gaudio’s website has photos of their pasta dishes and entrees that will make your mouth water. One of their specialty pasta dishes is penne alla vodka tossed with fresh spinach, grilled chicken, and topped with fresh mozzarella, then baked to a golden finish ($15.95). Gaudio’s has over a dozen pasta dishes, from the simplest spaghetti with tomato sauce ($8.95) to linguini with plump shrimp to Roman style spaghetti carbonara. Baked pasta dishes such as manicotti and meaty lasagna are Italian comfort food. Entrées include veal or chicken Francese, forktender and sautéed with a delicate white wine and lemon sauce ($16.95). You’ll get a side dish of pasta or salad too. These tender cutlets can be prepared in a number of delicious ways including alla marsala with sweet wine and mushrooms, piccata, parmigiana, Fiorentina with spinach and mozzarella or Milanese style. The video features shrimp Francese that is to die for. Your friendly waiter will tell you about the evening specials such as tilapia marechiara, prepared with a light tomato sauce, onions and olives, or fresh salmon broiled with butter and lemon. There’s also shell steak, steak pizzaiola, and classic dishes like sausage and peppers, and eggplant rollatini.

The food at Gaudio’s tastes like you’re in a fancy restaurant, but you can come casual, sit down, and be served a great meal on real dishes with real silverware. Do save some room for dessert where there’s house-made Italian cheesecake made with ricotta cheese, tiramisu, cannolis, and chocolate cake. A number of tempting ice cream treats are on hand such as classic Tartufo ice cream, tortoni or the fabulous coconut gelato truffle, coated in rich chocolate with coconut.
