Rove Restaurant and Bar

Rove Restaurant and Bar is Forest Hill’s newest addition to the lively Austin Street restaurant scene. Rove opened just about two months ago by owners Cyril Burke and Eve Gagnon, who’ve had much success at nearby Jack and Nellie’s, another favorite spot in the neighborhood. Rove’s concept is to offer well-prepared, simple fare along with great cocktails, fine wine, and craft beer in a friendly, casual environment. Judging from the packed dining room on a weeknight, it seems that they’ve hit the mark.

The charming space is divided into the bar area and the dining room, with a half wall in between. The décor is cool, modern, and rustic all at the same time thanks to barnlike wood panels and benches, thick wood tables and soft, industrial-style lighting. The blackboard wall boasts enticing cocktails, wine and beer, and Fernando mixes up their house concoctions such as the “fruit stand” made with tequila blanco, fresh tangerine juice, guava, fresh ginger, and lime. The “left road” has gin, triple sec and a splash of Prosecco for a refreshing attitude adjustment. My beer-loving partner enjoyed Braven White IPA, made in Brooklyn, along with other imported and craft beers. Even wine snobs will find their favorite vintages here and at Happy Hour (until 8pm) you can have certain beers for $5 and wines for $6.

I really appreciate one-page menus, where you know everything is fresh and decision-making is easier. We were pleased to meet Chef Oscar Carranza and sample some of his magic with a tasting menu of Rove’s delicious offerings. Start with a tempting filet mignon bruschetta topped with gorgonzola and caramelized onion with tender slices of juicy filet mignon. Pork buns are filled with pulled pork, scallions, and oyster sauce piled on a steamed rice bun ($12). These hand-held treats are great to share at the bar or at your table. Crunchy shrimp supreme are tender and plump, served with a zesty sauce, also great for sharing. Boneless sriracha chicken thighs provide a nice change to the ubiquitous chicken wings. These thighs are meaty, juicy, easy to eat and far less messy than wings, but have all the flavor and bite you crave ($10). Creamy burata cheese is topped with Chef Oscar’s homemade pesto and served with paper-thin slices of prosciutto, roasted garlic and toasted Italian bread. The Rove salad and grilled salmon salad are ample enough to be a meal but you won’t want to miss out on the fabulous entrees.

Rove has weeknight specials that are growing in popularity, such as Tuesday’s Burger night with a burger and beer for $15. Wednesday is rib night with juicy, fall-off-the-bone ribs and house made bbq sauce at $12 for a half rack and $17 for a full rack along with fries or a salad. Thursday’s pasta night comes with soup or salad for $15 so bring the family.

Rove’s blackened tilapia is moist and meaty, with a nice crust, served on a bed of zucchini noodles, sweet peas, mushrooms and a light cream sauce ($21). Pork tenderloin is served with creamy polenta and sautéed green beans for a hearty, delicious meal. Rove’s crusted chicken is also popular, served with grilled vegetables and creamy mashed potatoes ($19).

At lunch time or dinner time, Rove’s burgers and sandwiches really satisfy your appetite. Try the pulled chicken sandwich, home-cooked ham sandwich piled on with goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes on rye bread with pickles and salad or fries.

Brunch is served at Rove on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 3pm where you’ll choose among eggs Benedict, omelets, fried chicken and waffles, shrimp and red potato hash and more. Desserts at Rove are extra special and contain no calories! Ok, I’m joking, but the salted caramel cake, chocolate cheesecake brownie, pecan pie, and tres leches cake are too good to pass up.

Rove is a cool, comfortable, casual place to enjoy lunch, dinner, or weekend brunch. The bar is a nice place to meet up with friends and you’re welcome to nibble or eat there. Rove is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, and weekend brunch from 11am to 3pm followed by dinner service from 4pm.
