National Night Out At Astoria Park

By Catherine Gioino

On August 6 in throughout the city, policemen and guests alike celebrated the 30th Annual National Night Out Against Crime event. The event allowed for members of the neighborhood to come together with police precincts in the hopes of making the community a better and safer place.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown also visited many of the borough’s events, in which he stated, “National Night Out Against Crime’ was established three decades ago during the height of New York City’s violent street crime epidemic as a way for citizens to symbolically reclaim their streets. Now, as the crime rate has reached record lows, National Night Out remains an important reminder of the need to remain vigilant in the fight for public safety... National Night Out Against Crime’ provides Queens County residents with a wonderful opportunity to meet with the police officers and law enforcement officials who protect their neighborhoods and who are largely responsible for the sharp reduction in violent crime over the years and the significant improvement in the quality of life.”

Astoria Park was the event location for the 114th police precinct, which was sponsored by the 114th Precinct Community Council as well as the 114th Civilian Observation Patrol. The event was filled with the laughter of children as they played games at the Astoria- Long Island City Kiwanis booth, and even adults overall as they watched an Elvis Presley impersonator. Food and drinks were served to the public as safety was the main point stressed in the night’s events.

Numerous candidates were also in attendance to celebrate the event, including Queens Borough President candidate Peter Vallone Jr. and District 22 candidates Costa Constantinides, Danielle De Stefano and Gus Prentzas.

A proclamation was even awarded to the community in its dramatic crime reduction by Mayor Bloomberg and the city. You can learn more about the event and how to get involved at natw.org.
