First Queens Rapper At Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival

Queens native Billy Conahan will be representing the borough in the ninth annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival.
Conahan is the youngest of four finalists advanced to the Show and Prove Superbowl on Thursday, July 11. At age 21, he has been writing and performing for a year and a half, and will be competing for the opportunity to open the festival for hip-hop heavyweights like Redman, EPMD, and Pusha T. Last year, the festival drew well over 30,000 in attendance with Busta Rhymes as the headliner. This year, it’s projected that the attendance will top the record.
With a cool style and lyrical prowess that far exceeds his years, Conahan has proven himself to be the artist to look out for in the world of hip-hop. Releasing two mixtapes in the last year alone (Episode I in 2012 and Episode II: Smoke in 2013), Conahan has already conquered the art of becoming a master storyteller that knows how to engage listeners and take them on  a journey, both musically and lyrically. Episode II received close to 1,000 plays within its first week; and his first video, “What’s That Funny Smell”, received 1,000 views on YouTube within its first month.
With his smart and insightful commentary, Conahan has wowed audiences all over the city, and has taken large venues such as Sullivan Hall and the Highline Ballroom by storm. This July he will perform in front of his largest crowd yet at the legendary Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Conahan was picked out of hundreds of hopeful emcees and will be the first artist to represent Queens in the festival. His performance will be part of the festival’s Show and Prove night, where several of the area’s best and brightest emcees prove that they have what it takes to open up for Redman on July 13.
Conahan’s creative blend of rap, folk, and jazz is unlike anything else on the radio, and breathes new life into the world of hip-hop. He provides commentary on the hypocrisy and the inconsistencies that affect not only his generation, but the world in general. He thinks outside the box, and challenges the notion that we all should just stick to the status quo. In short, Conahan is setting the stage for the next chapter in hip-hop. For more information, visit www.billyconahan.com, www.youtube.com/billyconahan, www.billyconahan.bandcamp.com and www.facebook.com/billyconahan.
