JetBlue Pilot To Plead Insanity

The JetBlue Airways captain accused of disrupting a Las Vegas-bound flight by leaving the cockpit of his plane, screaming about religion and terrorists is planning to mount an insanity defense.

An attorney for Clayton Osbon recently notified U.S. District Judge Mary Lou Robinson of his client’s intention in a filing at the federal court in Amarillo, Texas.
Osbon was indicted on one count of interference of a flight crew. He has been held on the charge since shortly after the March 27 incident.

Witnesses, passengers on Flight 191 from JFK Airport to Las Vegas, said Osbon ran through the plane’s cabin yelling about Jesus and Al Qaeda.

The first officer locked Osbon out of the cockpit as determined passengers restrained him, officials said.

The first officer then diverted the flight to land in Amarillo, Texas where Osbon was arrested and ordered to undergo court-ordered psychiatric examination.

Robinson, on April 4, ordered Osbon to undergo a competency exam evaluating his fitness to stand trial and to determine if he was sane at the time of the incident.
