‘Kati Allo" means "something else" in Greek, and that’s certainly the case with the menu and the comfortable atmosphere at Kati Allo. Families, groups of friends and couples of all ages flock to Kati Allo for delicious Greek cuisine prepared on the spot and a comfortable, Mediterranean atmosphere in which to enjoy it.

Run by Manny and Christina Zavolas, Kati Allo, located just off Francis Lewis Boulevard and 29th Avenue in Bayside, has been open for some three years. Recent renovations have resulted in an expanded dining room boasting terra cotta floors and ochre-colored stucco walls adorned with stenciled paintings of fish and Grecian designs. Ceramic urns of flowers and pretty wicker furniture lend the feeling of a summer garden even on the coldest winter night. An outdoor dining area is set in a pleasant garden, while Greek music plays softly.

In keeping with traditional Greek cuisine, the menu relies heavily on fresh fish, lamb and vegetables, all at the peak of their flavor. Start with one of the tempting appetizers such as grilled octopus, cooked till tender and delicious, with just the right amount of vinegar and olive oil. Saganaki, a generous piece of fried kefalograviera cheese finished with a touch of flaming brandy, is a feast for the palate. Loukaniko, savory Greek sausages, are grilled and served with wedges of lemon. Cold appetizers include a number of tasty salads. If you can’t decide, try a trio of traditional spreads that includes homemade eggplant salad (melitzanosalata), fresh and light in the absence of mayonnaise, delicate caviar spread (taramosalata) and scordalia, a puree of potato and garlic. All, spread on triangles of warm pita bread, were excellent.

Kati Allo fish and seafood dishes, prepared simply with lemon, olive oil and herbs, are fresh and delicious. Try the whole fish of the day, which might be porgie, red snapper or striped bass. Swordfish kebabs of flaky, tender fish which has been marinated, then grilled to perfection, are very popular. Plump shrimp are served in a number of ways, including Santorini style, with feta cheese and tomatoes, or skewered and grilled simply with lemon and olive oil. Served with vegetable, rice or potatoes, all Kati Allo seafood offerings make for a very satisfying meal.

Kati Allo serves a good variety of hot and juicy meats and chicken, all prepared to order. The doner plate, thinly sliced seasoned pork cooked slowly on a rotisserie, melts in the mouth. Gyro or souvlaki meats are made into a sandwich for $3.95, or presented as a full dinner with salad, potatoes, tzatziki sauce and pita for $7.75. Zavolas purchases fine quality meats and then marinates them in special herbs. Tender breast of chicken stuffed with spinach and feta is just $12.95. Chicken sauteed in garlic, herbs, tomato and white wine is another special menu offering.

Traditional Greek dishes such as fricassee, veal or lamb stew with orzo and even moussaka are available as well. Beer and wine can complement your meal. Check the board for daily specials, and you can always consult the friendly and helpful wait staff. A children’s menu is also on offer.

Lunch specials cost just $4.95 or $5.95 and feature veggie burgers, gyro sandwiches with French fries, Greek or Caesar salads and more. They’re well worth a visit.

Kati Allo does a brisk take-out business, so stop in for a menu, then fax in your order. Credit cards are accepted and Kati Allo offers free delivery to home or office.

Whether you eat in their quaint dining room or take out, a meal at Kati Allo is a very pleasurable experience. The restaurant is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner till 11 p.m. There’s plenty of street parking and off-premises catering is available.
