Anna’s Place Makes You Feel At Home

I’m always happy to visit Anna’s Place, where I feel like I’m at home—and so will you. You’ll be warmly welcomed by the lovely and hospitable Anna Walsh and her staff, led by Joyce and Roger, who always have a smile for you. Enjoy a drink at the lively bar, where a very happy Happy Hour takes place daily from 4 to 7 p.m. Free hors d’oeuvres are served at that time. Thursday and Sunday nights are karaoke nights which have turned into a big hit.

Start with an appetizer such as crispy popcorn shrimp with tomato and parsley sauce or delectable stuffed, baked clams ($7). Potato skins are sinfully delicious as is the fried calamari, and the portions are generous enough to share. A real treat for me was the pan-roasted crab cakes, made with real crabmeat and spices. Creamy tartar sauce is the perfect accompaniment for these succulent cakes ($8.95).

Menu entrées include an array of prime steaks, such as the shell steak au poivre with black peppercorns or Irish whisky steak, which is one of my favorites. This thick, juicy steak is grilled to your liking and topped with a mound of crisp, fried onions, surrounded by a pool of smooth whisky sauce. How does blackened sirloin with Cajun spices sound? There’s also tender baby rack of lamb. Blackened Cajun chicken is a spicy favorite as well and so is the Louisiana shrimp, both prepared on the spot and beautifully presented. Chicken and baby back ribs that fall off the bones, smothered in tangy barbecue sauce are only $14.95. Chicken cordon bleu layered with ham and cheese is a real treat, or go for traditional roast turkey with stuffing and dressing. In addition to the generous portions of home style cooking, all entrées include a trip to Anna’s famous soup and salad bar, where a different homemade soup is featured every day. I love their German potato salad, the mixed bean salad and the pickled beets. There’s a tangy cucumber salad and crunchy carrot salad, and some people come especially for the herring in cream sauce. The chef’s répertoire of soups includes potato leek, cream of celery, chicken noodle and mushroom and seafood bisque or clam chowder on Fridays.


This summer, Anna’s Place is featuring a five-course dinner special for only $17.95, served seven days a week. Start with crunchy bruschetta, topped with chopped tomato and basil, a plate of herring in cream sauce and unlimited trips to the soup and salad bar. After that, choose among entrées including herb-crusted salmon, chicken marsala, sliced steak with merlot mushroom sauce, or their famous weinerschnitzel or roast loin of pork. Next, enjoy your choice of dessert and a cup of freshly brewed coffee. This summer dinner special is a great way to beat the heat and keep your dining costs down. I saw plenty of families gathered in Anna’s comfortable dining room, their home away from home, to share a meal together. Many of the steady clientele come several times a month for the great food and friendly atmosphere.

If lighter fare is what you’re after, or for lunch any day of the week, try Anna’s famous burger, topped with sautéed onions, mushrooms, bacon and cheese ($7.95). I loved the crunchy, beer-battered fish and chips made with flaky codfish and served with traditional malt vinegar for the chips. Next time I’ll get the shepherd’s pie or the steak tidbits on toasted garlic bread with a side order of crisp French fries. Many lighter items are available on a special bar menu. Hot wings and jalapeno poppers, for example, are perfect for sharing with friends.

Sunday brunch is cozy and comfortable, and best of all, affordable. For just $12.95, you’ll get a complimentary cocktail and your choice of omelets, French toast, pancakes, salads and more.

Complete your meal with a steaming Irish coffee or the house specialty, which is spiked with Kahlua, Tia Maria, and Grand Marnier. The homemade apple strudel is flaky and delicious. Other desserts such as black forest cake, hazelnut tart and chocolate mousse cake are also on the menu, so try and save room for one of them.


There’s parking at Sears, a short block away, and the V and R trains are at the corner for easy access. Plan your next party at Anna’s, where they can accommodate private parties of up to 60 people for a shower, birthday, business lunch or dinner. The restaurant is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and Sunday brunch and the bar stays open until 3 a.m. The service is fast and friendly and Anna’s smile will surely brighten your day.
