Bison Bonanza; At The Zoo


Besides the annual Bison Bonanza weekend; there’s a birthday bash to boot at the Queens Zoo, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park on June 13. The zoo is celebrating its 10th anniversary and in honor of the event visitors are invited to take part in all the festivities such as singing "Happy Birthday to Zoo," create a birthday craft, enjoy a special birthday performance and celebrate in true zoo fashion—complete with birthday cakes for animal residents.

•Birthday Bites: Bisons, tear into a giant cake made of fresh hay and sod, and topped with 10 carrot candles at 11 a.m.

Sea lions sink their teeth into a cake made of ice and frozen fish at noon.

Spectacled bears actually like fruitcake at 1 p.m.

Hogs will have something to snort about when they receive their celebratory delight at 2 p.m.

Goats will enjoy sod, hay and grain at 3 p.m.

•Birthday Entertainment: Enjoy a special birthday performance from Wildlife Theater’s Natalie Burgess as she sings a song written specifically for this special occasion.

•Wildlife Well Wishes: Visitors will get their turn to wish the zoo a happy birthday by creating a special birthday card in the Wild room from 1 to 4 p.m.

Activities will include: Pard’ner Up, across from the sea lion exhibit from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m; Range Races, Wild-side lawn; Craft Corner, crafts, Wild-side pathways; Prairie Paints, outside bison exhibit; Animal Anecdotes, outside barred owl exhibit; Bison Background, outside bison exhibit.

The Queens Zoo is located at 53-51 111th St. in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekends, April through October.
